Active DIY Open Baffle loudspeaker system

Jan Nielsen - web page: Soundimage.dk

Reviewer and one of the editorial staff at the former Danish HiFi Magazine High Fidelity. Now he's with the new Danish online web magazine NOMONO. He has made his own loudspeakers and amplifiers since the mid 70'ies and in this gallery you can see his latest project incorporating some Ground Sound products (DCN24, PSU12SA and PA3CC).

The OB loudspeaker system divided into two "boxes" - The small baffle holds two mid-range ceramic drivers Accuton C² 90-T6 and the tweeter is a modified ribbon driver Aurum Cantus G3.
The larger H-baffle holds four Tymphany LAT700 (=LAT 2800) which performs the bass. The effective piston area is 4 x 820cm² = 3280cm² !...in each side...equals five 18" drivers total !

The Amplifier Tower on the right is a 3-way mono chassis with only one PA3CC amplifier module supplied from a 1500VA toroidal transformer and our PSU12SA. The digital crossover is of course our DCN24. The remaining three output channels is taken out of the box via RCA connectors.

Measurement of the "LAT2800" close field with no correction or crossover filtering. The frequency response shows a reasonable linear output to about 500 Hz.

The same measurement - but a 220 Hz/4th order low-pass has been added. To equalize the dipole drop off a 12dB/octave shelving has been added from approximately 80 Hz. A sharp cut at 15 Hz/24 dB remove the very low subsonic frequencies.

Jan has promissed more information about his project in the near future...
